Writers often struggle to create conflict that feels natural. Characters argue, shut down, or blow up. But if there’s no clear reason behind it, the conflict starts to feel empty or forced.
That’s where the Human NEXUS motivators come in. The Human NEXUS motivators describe the internal drives behind every decision a person makes, and what happens when those drives are under pressure.
Each character is driven by a core internal motivator. And when that motivator is under stress, it doesn’t disappear, it turns into a negative conflict strategy. A clear and understandable way the character falls apart under pressure.
What are the motivators?
🟢 Stabilizer
Core Drive: Structure, reliability, responsibility.
Positive Conflict Strategies:
- Creates emotional stability in tense situations
- Brings order and structure to group dynamics
- Mediates disagreements with calm, values-based reasoning
Negative Conflict Strategies:
- Withdrawal – Disengages emotionally or physically. Retreats into silence, routine, or isolation when they feel criticized, dismissed, or overwhelmed.
- Overly rule-bound – Becomes rigid about structure, rules, or morality in tense situations. Fixates on “what’s right,” even if it damages relationships or halts progress. May poke holes in others’ logic to regain a sense of order or control.
🔴 Driver
Core Drive: Progress, achievement, action
Positive Conflict Strategies:
- Confronts issues directly and drives resolution
- Makes decisions quickly under pressure
- Motivates others to act and follow through
Negative Conflict Strategies:
- Steamrolling – Forces action at the expense of input or collaboration. Intimidates or dismisses others in the name of “progress.”
- Impatience – Dismisses complexity or emotional needs as inefficient. Rushes decisions, avoids nuance, and skips key relational steps to keep things moving.
🟣 Solutionary
Core Drive: Clarity, deep understanding, improvement
Positive Conflict Strategies:
- Reframes the problem to reveal deeper patterns
- Thrives in understanding complexity
- Offers creative, big-picture solutions during high-stakes moments
Negative Conflict Strategies:
- Deconstruction – Overly critical or dismissive of others’ feelings or ideas. May dismantle functional things to examine or challenge them, often undermining cohesion or creating conflict where none existed.
- Analysis Paralysis – Overthinks situations to the point of inaction. Unable to move forward until every possible angle is understood.
🔵 Influencer
Core Drive: Social connection, empathy, relationships
Positive Conflict Strategies:
- Uses emotional awareness to de-escalate tension
- Builds rapport and keeps group morale high
- Helps others feel heard and included in resolution
Negative Conflict Strategies:
- Manipulation – Uses emotional influence to control perception. May distort the truth through charm, flattery, or gossip to stay liked or avoid direct conflict.
- Validation-Seeking – Seeks approval at the cost of honesty to preserve likeability or avoid discomfort. May downplay truth, avoid disagreement, or shift views to stay in others’ favor.
What does this teach writers?
Conflict sticks when it’s rooted in who your character is, not just what’s happening around them.
When conflict responses are tied to internal motivators, characters don’t react randomly. They break down in a way that reflects who they are and what they care about.
Whether you’re writing a hero’s collapse, a villain’s undoing, or a friend’s unexpected shift, these conflict strategies give you a tool to write emotionally grounded breakdowns that matter.
The strongest moments in your story aren’t what your characters face. They’re the moments that pressure distorts what they care about the most.
